Common Sense America was founded in 2002 in response to the political correctness of the major media and halls of academia. Our banner, "Let my soul dwell in common sense," is a quote from the Reverend Thomas Reid, one of the great thinkers of the Scottish Enlightenment Period. The Rev. Reid's full quote, "I despise philosophy and renounce its guidance; let my soul dwell in common sense," sum up his strong belief that reality is something knowable to all people from our own experiences. Common sense to the Rev. Reid and his contemporaries was based on knowledge of the real world around us, and contained certain truth that were self evident to anyone willing to see. It is these self evident truth of the knowable world that have through the years been the foundation for what we call common sense.
For years the United States was run on these principles of common sense and well proven, time-honored knowledge. During that time we, as a country, went from being thirteen disparate colonies in a battle for survival against the world's greatest superpower, to become a superpower in our own right. Using those common sense values and that time-tested wisdom we survived a civil war, depressions and two world wide conflagrations. During this time we built an economy and political system envied by the world.
For the last forty years the Country has been in a new civil war between those that believe in those same values that made us great, and those that would take us down the path of socialism and big government, creating in their wake a splintered country of squabbling victim groups. For forty years a battle has been raging to make the abnormal normal, and the normal abnormal. We at Common Sense America have decided to join that battle. We believe strongly in the old adage that all it takes for bad people to succeed is for good people to do nothing. Our hope is that by exposing much of what is going on in the Country today, and by suggesting common sense solution to the problems we face, we can enlighten and motivate many good people to join in the battle for the Country's future.
Some may consider that last paragraph to be somewhat over the top, but hopefully by exposing the dark underside of many of today's most cherished politically correct ideas and institutions we will change some minds.
Each month we will address a new topic. We will use this space to examine the issue, highlight pertinent information not generally reported by the Media and take a logical, common sense look at the topic. We will also from time to time touch on issues of family and community because we think those two institutions are the bedrock on which this great Country is built.
